Last Post-Self Reflection

“This is your final required blog for your 2008-2009 school year.  I have hopes that some of you will continue to write in your blog.  You have made connection with other bloggers and hopefully are inspired to continue writing.  This quarter your self-reflection will take the form of a blog.  Please answer the following questions, one per paragraph:” – http://rumfordwriters.edublogs.org/

1) In your opinion, what was the purpose of this blogging activity? (Why did I choose to do blogging instead of more traditional writing activities?)

I think that the purpose of the blogging was to get us comfortable with all kinds of writing, whether it’s typing or writing it out by hand.  Writing on the computer is the same as writing by hand; I just think that it’s easier.  I think that it was also for you to see if we were any different when we were writing on the computer verses writing on paper.  Personally I like writing on the computer a lot more than writing on paper, and I’m happy we did the blogs instead of something more traditional.

2.  What have you accomplished during your blogging?

Throughout the blogging I’ve learned more about how to write, and I’ve also learned more about my favorite music, bands, cars, and people.  The blogs haven’t just helped me learn what I need to learn for school, they’ve helped me learn about what I’m interested in.  I’ve learned how to manage my time better when I’m writing.  I’ve learned that it’s hard to finish a blog entry when you’re eating cereal, watching TV, watching YouTube, on the phone with friends, and trying to write.  I’ve learned to eliminate most of those things; I’m just writing and listening to music now.

3.  What key concepts have you learned while blogging? (This can be about writing, research or technology etc.)

I’ve learned that, to write a good piece, it requires a lot of research.  You can’t just write whatever you’ve got on the top of your head about the subject; you need to know a lot about them, which means a lot of research.  It’s not always easy to find good information, either.  Sometimes you have to really look for it.  And once you’ve found the information, you need to put it into your own words, which also isn’t easy.  I’ve also learned that blogs really are a way to connect with people that are like you.  For example, only someone that likes the same kind of music as me would come to my blog, because it’s pretty much only one type of music on the blog.

4. Based on the skills you learned while blogging, how will this benefit you in the future? This maybe inside or outside of school.

I think that my time with the blog will help me write papers and essays later in my life.  I won’t try to eat, watch TV, and talk to friends while writing.  The blogs have also helped give me the ability to write longer papers.  At the start of this year, when a 500 word paper was assigned I could have cried.  Now it’s not really a big deal.  I think that this will be incredibly helpful in high school and college when I have to start writing longer papers.  I think these self reflections have really helped me learn to write longer papers, too.

So that’s my last blog entry.  Below is one of my favorite songs.  Have a good one.

Angels & Airwaves (AVA)

Angels and Airwaves is a fun and entertaining alternative rock band, which was made when blink 182 fell apart.  Angels and Airwaves currently has four members, Tom Delonge, the singer and one of the guitarists for the band, David Kennedy, the second guitarist, Adam Willard, the drummer, and Matt Wachter, the bassist.  Tom Delonge came from the bands blink 182 and Box Car Racer, David Kennedy from blink 182, Box Car Racer, and Over My Dead Body, Adam Willard from Rocket from the Crypt, The Special Goodness, and The Offspring, and Matt Wachter came from 30 Seconds to Mars.

Tom Delonge started to write songs for the new band he was making after blink 182 began their hiatus in 2005.  Tom Delonge formed the band along with Adam Willard (known as Atom), David Kennedy, and Ryan Sinn (the original bassist, he was replaced on April 23, 2007 by Matt Wachter), and released their first album on May 23, 2006.   We Don’t Need to Whisper got to fourth place on the billboard 200, and the album went gold, meaning it sold over 500,000 copies.  The current top five songs from We Don’t Need to Whisper are:

The Adventure

The War

Do It for Me Now

The Gift

It Hurt’s

Angels & Airwaves released their second full album in 2007, called I-Empire, which made number 9 on the billboard 200 and sold 66,000 copies in the first week it was released.  The album also reached number 1 in sales on iTunes.  A few songs off of         I-Empire were released as singles, including Everything’s Magic and Breathe, which are now two of Angels and Airwaves most popular songs.  In fact, on August 25, 2007, Everything’s Magic was the most requested song on the KROQ radio station in California.  The top five songs from I-Empire on iTunes right now are:

Everything’s Magic

Secret Crowds

Breathe

Call to Arms

Sirens

Modlife was released by Tom Delonge in June of 2008.  Modlife is a social networking site for musicians and businesses.  Tom made the site because, he says, he needs to fix the music industry, which I think means he thinks he needs to bring the music industry closer together through the site.  On Modlife, AVA released their music documentary, Start the Machine.  Angels & Airwaves plans on releasing a movie called I-Empire, named after their second album.

AVA plans on releasing their third album and their I-Empire movie on Christmas day, 2009.  It will be free, as far as I know, on the day it is released.

This is the music video for Everything’s Magic.  Enjoy.

Panic! At the Disco

Panic! At the Disco is a strange alternative/pop/dance band with interesting lyrics and very weird music videos.  They’re a very entertaining band because they’re so different.  Panic! At the Disco writes songs that make you think.  Also, almost none of their songs are negative.  It’s amazing, because Panic! At the Disco can take a negative subject and make a positive song out of it.  For example, Panic! At the Disco’s song ‘There’s a Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven’t Thought of it Yet’ talks about a party with tons of problems, but makes it sound like a good thing.  They add a fast and exciting beat to make a fun, danceable song.  They sound like they’re having fun, which makes you like the music.  Panic! At the Disco has Brendon Urie singing, Ryan Ross on the guitar and singing backup vocals, Jon Walker on the bass guitar and backup singing, and Spencer Smith on the drums.

Panic! At the Disco started out in Las Vegas, Nevada, with their first album released in 2005, ‘A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out’.  Their first album included songs like ‘I Write Sins Not Tragedies’ and ‘The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage’ which made Panic! At the Disco very popular very fast.  A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out sold 2.2 million copies and reached #13 on the US Billboard 200.  Panic! At the Disco also shot and released a few music videos to go with the songs on this album, including the video for ‘I Write Sins Not Tragedies’ which made TRL’s countdown as #10 and won the MTV music video of the year.  After the release of this album, Panic! At the Disco toured around the world for a while with bands like Bloc Party, Jack’s Mannequin, The Plain White T’s, Cobra Starship, Fall Out Boy, The Academy Is…, Hellogoodbye, and Marilyn Mansion.

Panic! At the Disco released their next album in 2008.  Pretty.  Odd. was released on May 25, 2008.  Pretty. Odd. is a great album, that’s very fun to listen to with songs like ‘Nine in the Afternoon’.  It’s a very catchy album; the songs make you want to sing along too.  Their three most popular songs from Pretty. Odd. are ‘Nine in the Afternoon’, ‘That Green Gentleman’, and ‘When the Day Met the Night’.  Panic! At the Disco’s third album is planned to be released sometime in 2009.

Panic! At the Disc’s current top 5 songs on iTunes are:

I Write Sins Not Tragedies

Nine in the Afternoon

The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage

Lying is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off

But It’s Better If You Do

Below is the music video for Nine in the Afternoon.

Rock Genera’s

Rock Summary-

Rock is a type of music normally involving electric guitars, base guitars, drums, and a vocalist(s).  It also sometimes has acoustic guitars.  The beat can range from a fast and up-beat sound, to a slow and sad beat.  The electric guitar is normally the dominant instrument, with the base and the drums holding the beat.  The lyrics can also range from happy and up-lifting to sad and emotional.  The lyrics can be pointless to some people, and meaningful to others.  Rock is an emotional type of music, telling the stories of the artists writing the songs.

Sub-Genera’s of Rock-

Rock has evolved into many different genera’s.  None of them are exactly the same, but they’re all kind of similar.  They’ve all got the same rock feeling, and they’ve all got guitars and drums.

Rock ‘n’ Roll-

Rock ‘n’ roll is the original rock.  It had a more laid back feeling, it wasn’t as intense as some of the rock now.  Rock ‘n’ roll was created in the early 1950’s by a few different artists.  The very first rock ‘n’ roll artist is debated about.  Rock ‘n’ roll was instantly accepted and became cool really fast.  It changed fashion, attitude, and life styles.  It became popular around the world, and soon, many countries were coming out with rock bands.

Surf Rock-

Surf rock is a very kicked back style of rock.  It focuses a lot on loose electric guitars and percussion.  At the start of the surf rock time, tempos were sped up and songs were a little faster.  That lasted a while, but later, American west coast bands like the Beach Boys slowed down the tempo, and added mild ‘kick back and relax’ lyrics to make surf music what it still is today.

Punk Rock-

Punk rock came to be in the mid 1970’s in the USA and Great Britain.  Punk is faster, more hardcore music than the other types of rock.  It can be a lot more emotional, or it can be a lot less emotional.  Punk was very popular for a short time when it first came out, and then it died.  Completely.  It came back 20 years to start regaining its popularity again.  It’s one of my favorite types of music.

Alternative Rock-

Alternative rock is my favorite type of rock.  I love the lyrics, the beat, the instruments, and the message it sends.  It started out in the 1980’s and has been around since.  Alternative rock is a kind of punk rock, I guess, but softer.  It’s not as hardcore or loud as punk.  It also focuses on different emotions.  Alternative normally focuses on love, courage, strength, sadness, fear, etc. while punk normally focuses on hate, anger, conformity, and occasionally love or sadness.  Alternative rock was most popular in the 1990’s.

Emo Rock-

Emo rock was made in the 1980’s as a sub-genre of intense, hardcore punk.  Emo stands for emotional, which is what the bands that sing emo are all about, emotion.  Emo music is confused a lot with emo style.  Emo bands don’t always have emo’s in them.  For example, the band Fallout Boy is an emo band, but the band members aren’t emo.

Below is a video that I really like, from one of my favorite bands.  It’s the song ‘The Great Escape’ by the alternative/punk band ‘Boys Like Girls’.

The Fast and the Furious Series

The Fast and the Furious

2 Fast 2 Furious

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift

The Fast and the Furious 4

The Fast and the Furious movies are a piercing series of four action/racing movies including ‘The Fast and the Furious’, ‘2 Fast 2 Furious’, ‘The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift’, and ‘The Fast and the Furious 4’. The series started on June 22nd, 2001 with ‘The Fast and The Furious’, and is currently at movie number four, with ‘The Fast and the Furious 4’, which was released April 3rd, 2009.

The original ‘The Fast and the Furious’ was made on June 22nd, 2001. It’s all about street racing, hijacking, stealing, and the police trying to stop all of it. The movie’s set in Los Angeles, its suburbs, and its streets. Dom (the main character) is the head of a street racing gang, and is suspected of hijacking and stealing millions of dollars worth of hi-tech electronic equipment. The FBI sends in an undercover guy to take a look at Dom and his gang. Brian (the undercover agent and another major character) races with Dom and his friends, and becomes friends with them. He also falls in love with Dom’s younger sister. The movie has many amazingly powerful and expensive cars, including the 1970 Dodge Charger , the 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX, the 2000 Honda S2000, the 1995 Nissan Skyline GT-R R33, the 1995 Toyota Supra, and the 1999 Ferrari F355.

‘2 Fast 2 Furious’ was released on the 6th of June, 2003. It’s pretty much on the same deal as the first movie; drug lords, thugs, drug busts, racers, and cops. This movie’s got a little less racing than the first one does, and a little more fighting and shooting and stuff. The movie’s moved from racing in LA to racing and drug lords in Miami. Brian (from the earlier movie) and his friend Roman (Rome) from his childhood team up to try to take down a billionaire drug lord. They go in undercover as drivers and transporters for the drug lord, and the story happens. This movie also has some intensely awesome cars. For some examples, the 2001 Nissan Skyline GT-R Spec V, the 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII, and the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Yenko S/C were all driven by Brian in this movie.

In ‘The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift’, an entire new set of characters are brought in. This movie focuses on the life of an American street racing teenager, that’s constantly getting into trouble with the police. He’s sent to live in Tokyo with his father, which was supposed to keep him out of trouble. It didn’t. The drag racing American didn’t understand how to drive in a big city like Tokyo. He’s taught to drift in a tuner car, instead of flooring it in a muscle car. He gets into trouble with the Japanese Mafia, though, and really has to start racing. This movie features cars like Skyline-Powered 1967 Ford Mustang , Drift King Twin-Turbo Nissan 350Z , Veil side Mazda RX-7 , Rear-Drive Mitsubishi Evolution IX , V8-Powered 1967 Ford Mustang , and a Turbocharged Mazda RX-8.

The current final movie in the series is The Fast and the Furious 4. It starts out in Brazil, but is moved to LA when Dom has to run from the police. This movie is, again, about a few dudes trying to take down a Mexican drug lord. Brian is an undercover cop in the operation of driving heroine across the border of Mexico and California without getting arrested. Dom is also involved as a driver for the drug lord, and helps to bring him down along with Brian and the FBI. This movie stars cars like the vintage Shelby Mustang GT500 , the BMW M5 , the 1970 Chevrolet Camaro, the Mitsubishi Evolution XI ,the 1970 Chevelle SS 454 , the 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner , and the 2009 Subaru WRX STI.

There are plans for a fifth ‘The Fast and the Furious’, and it will have some of the same actors as in the other The Fast and the Furious movies. It hasn’t started filming yet, though, so it’ll be a while before I write about that.

The Academy Is…

The Academy Is… is a alternative/rock band from Chicago made up originally of William Beckett (vocals), Mike Carden (guitar), Adam Siska (bass), Adrian LaTrace  Jr.  (guitar), and Mike DelPrincipe (drums).  The Academy Is… was formed in 2002, and has come out with three albums, Almost Here, Santi, and their latest, Fast Times at Barrington High.  Their current top five songs on iTunes are About a Girl, Slow Down, Summer Hair = Forever Young, The Phrase That Pays, and We’ve Got a Big Mess On Our Hands.

The Academy Is… started out as a very small and unnoticed band, but were eventually heard by a member of Fall Out Boy, who told their label, Fueled By Ramen, and had the band signed.  The original band didn’t last, though.  Tom Conrad replaced LaTrace in 2004 and Andy Mrotek replaced DelPrincipe, for no real explained reason.  The band took off with the new additions.  They toured with a few bands, before writing their first record, including Fall Out Boy, Something Corporate, and Armor for Sleep.  After the tour, the band went their separate ways while Will and Mike wrote the first full length album for The Academy Is… (Almost Here) in Chicago.  The band flew to Los Angeles in 2005 and had the CD produced.

More recently, The Academy Is… has released albums Santi and Fast Times at Barrington High and has done quite a few tours and shows with quite a few bands.  These bands have included Cobra Starship, +44, The Rocket Summer, Gym Class Heroes, and Panic! At the Disco.  The Academy Is… is a great band, and only getting better and better.  They’re very popular with both fans, and other bands.  The Rolling Stones have placed The Academy Is… on their top 10 bands to watch list.
